Physical competence and resilience
Spring is here and with the nice cool but sunny weather, we were able to head out with the Montessori Otumoetai children to Carlton Reserve again.
At Carlton Reserve, there is a skate park, playground and lots of space for us to play tug of war, be involved in ball games and also running races to build up our stamina.
Early this year when we vistied Carlton Reserve, we kept saying that one day we will bring our scooters and bikes and this time it did happen.
We took a group of children with their scooters/ bikes and rode all the way to the skate park at Carlton Reserve.
It was great to see most of the children taking risk and attempting to ride down the ramps (big and small) with their scooters.
Physical activeness and risk taking are important dispositions that we want our children to cultivate and it is awesome to see the children peservere through difficulties, try and learn new skills and also take risks.
The journey back to Montessori Otumoetai after lots of fun at Carlton reserve is never easy as we have to walk up hill, but the children soldier on with resilience building. Singing songs, playing I-spy are games are some examples the children and teachers play to take our mind off the long and tiring walk back.
As phsycial competence and activeness continue to be one of our core curriculum area, there is no doubt we will continue our adventures at Carlton reserve.
