At BestStart Katikati the under two’s room is alive with colour as the babies explore paint and other art products. You can feel the excitement as the children express themselves by experimenting with colour and texture. They are learning how they can change things. For example, mixing two colours creates a new colour.

There are many ways to explore art and young children will benefit from exploring in their own way. They take control of their own learning and feel proud of their accomplishments. Most of all they enjoy the experience. Using all their senses to explore.

When finger/hand painting or holding a brush, the children are gaining muscle control and developing their fine motor skills. Children develop their hand eye co-ordination by controlling where they want to make a mark.  Often, we will do a group mural on a fence or wall that allows children to make a cooperative painting in a social setting.

Through the use of colour, shape and form, children express themselves in ways they do not yet have words for. They can express their moods and feelings in a way that helps them identify how they feel. Art is for all ages, and we encourage the children to be creative and expressive.
