🧁 Learning Through Baking at BestStart 🍽️ Our school holiday program cooked up more than just yummy scones! Tamariki in the nursery joined Kaiako Ruth for a hands-on baking experience, mixing fun with learning in the most delicious way.

From counting cups of ingredients to stirring the batter, baking gave our tamariki the chance to build early numeracy, coordination, and teamwork skills. It was a joyful, shared experience—and one that ended with buttery scones and full tummies!

For the school holiday program our children were given the opportunity to bake some yummy scones with kaiako Ruth. Kaiako Ruth loves to bake yummy treats so today she decided to share her passion with her young tamariki in the nursery room. Kaiako Ruth showed all the children the ingredients they will be using.

She showed them the measuring cup and handed out all the dry ingredients to each tamariki to pour into the bowl. While pouring kaiako Ruth would count 1 cup, 2 cups. Baking is a great way to help children learn counting and associate the counting to the objects. Ruth also mixed in the milk and butter and each child was given the opportunity to stir the ingredient together.

After when all the ingredients were ready to be combined, our kaiako Ruth combained the batter together as the children watched her put each individual dough on the baking tray. Kaiako Jade helped set up the table as a proper dining table with placemats ready for the children to eat.

Our tamariki really enjoyed the butter yummy scones and sooner or later the tray was empty. Baking is a great way for children to learn about numbers, counting, pouring skills, hand eye co ordination, building hand muscles while storing but also learning how to contribute towards the activity with others- working alongside others .
