In the kawakawa room (preschool ) this month there has been a variety of events that have taken place starting with our mother’s day breakfast which as a centre we wanted to show our mothers how much we appreciate them ,the children also got involved and made mother’s day cards for their mums as well as paper bouquets and lastly an all bout mum card which were questions the children answered about their mums and how much they love them which was great to hear.

We also celebrated pink shirt day we celebrated this day by encouraging all the children and staff to come dressed in pink to make awareness against bullying. We also educated the children about bullying and we did pink activities to support this great cause, the children were also encouraged to bring in a gold coin donation to support this awareness. The centre also sold tickets for a raffle that parents could win, and the money would go towards the cause, this awareness encourage children to stand up and not let people bully them and that it is ok to speak up and there will be always someone ready to help.

The next event we celebrated in the preschool room was character book day, this was a fun exciting day where the children got to wear their best character outfit as well as come to school with their matching book. On this day we encouraged the children to stand up and tell their class about their favourite book, this activity was great for the children’s confidence as well as developing their public speaking, and the best dressed child won a book at the end of the day.

Towards the end of the month, we had our New Zealand sign language week, which was great for the children as well as the staff members, we got to learn the colours, numbers, animals as well as everyday words in sign language. The children were very keen to learn, and they did very well at remembering, which was great to see, this was important for our children to learn as sign language is New Zealand’s second official language and now, they know the basics of it. We also explored Samoan language week, were we got to learn sentences in Samoan and greetings which we incorporated in our daily mat timed and roll calls. And lastly, we had Gumboot day an exciting fun event to end off our month, all the children were encouraged to come in their gumboots and bring a gold coin donation to contribute towards raising money for kids mental health.

The children really enjoyed getting involved in these, but also found time to explore our new interests within the room, this being a vet corner which is an extension from the doctor’s corner which we had last month as there has been an interest in animals in the Kawakawa room. By providing a vet corner this taught our children how to look after pets, what equipment gets used at a vet, what medication gets used as well as all the resources needed at the vet to heal our pets. The children have also been very busy building forts and having a great time exploring them.

The children have also been very busy working on building friendships as well as “being a good friend “as there has been a lot of toddlers transitioning into our preschool room lately. We have also worked on our room rules which is in a form of a treaty which the children put together and had to sign to say they will be following the treaty which was great as this was a responsibility for all the children in the Kawakawa room and they knew they must follow those rules daily.
