During Cook Islands Language Week, our tamariki at BestStart Mangere East had the opportunity to take part in a meaningful cultural experience, learning how to grate coconut and discovering how coconut juice is prepared and used in different Cook Islands foods.
With the support and guidance of Teacher Evlyn and Teacher Ruperto, tamariki were able to observe, participate and learn about how coconut is prepared and its important role within Cook Islands culture.
This hands-on experience supported children to build their confidence, develop fine motor skills, practise concentration and spark their curiosity, while learning through real-life cultural practices.
The children also had the opportunity to taste the freshly grated coconut and squeeze it through a cloth to extract the coconut juice. They were fascinated to see how the juice was produced and how it can be used in traditional Cook Islands foods.
These experiences are important because they help tamariki develop an appreciation and respect for the different cultures represented within our centre community. They also provide opportunities for children to learn new words, share experiences and strengthen their sense of belonging.
At BestStart Mangere East, we love celebrating the diversity within our community and creating opportunities for tamariki to learn through culture, connection and meaningful hands-on experiences.
