August was a joyful month at our centre as we celebrated Indian Independence Day, Tongan Language Week, Onam, Raksha Bandhan and Filipino Language Month.
These special occasions gave children opportunities to experience different cultures through art, music, stories, language, traditional clothing and hands-on activities. Children explored new greetings, listened to cultural songs, created artwork and learned about the traditions that are important to many of our families.
Through these experiences, they developed an appreciation for the diversity within our centre and the wider community.
A highlight of the month was the involvement of our families, who shared their knowledge, traditions and cultural stories with us. These authentic experiences helped children make meaningful connections and strengthened our sense of community.
Our celebrations reflect the principles and strands of Te Whāriki. Through Mana Whenua (Belonging), children saw their cultures recognised and valued, helping them develop a strong sense of identity and connection.
Through Mana Reo (Communication), children explored different languages, songs and stories, supporting their oral language development.
Through Mana Tangata (Contribution), children learned to respect and appreciate the cultures, ideas and experiences of others.
These experiences also support our centre priorities of fostering cultural responsiveness, strengthening partnerships with families and whānau, encouraging communication skills and creating an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and respected.
We thank all the families who contributed to these celebrations. Together, we are helping children grow as confident learners who appreciate and celebrate the rich diversity of our community.
