Our tamariki at BestStart Epsom have been busy exploring the rich cultures that shape our centre. From Samoan traditions to Filipino celebrations and Matariki’s special meaning, these experiences help build inclusive, respectful, and connected learners.
At BestStart Epsom, our diverse cultures make our community vibrant and alive. We believe that by learning about different cultures, our tamariki develop respect, empathy, and a true sense of belonging.
Samoan Language Week
We began Samoan Language Week with warm “Talofa” greetings, singing and dancing to Le Aute, and exploring siapo art, featuring traditional Samoan patterns and symbols.
Tamariki learned that these designs tell stories of Samoan life, history, and family connections. A special highlight was welcoming one of our own whānau members, who shared Samoan stories, danced with the tamariki, and treated everyone to panikeke — a traditional Samoan sweet.
Through these rich experiences, our tamariki built understanding of Samoan traditions, language, hospitality, and the importance of community.
Philippine Cultural Week
Our centre came alive with colour and warmth for Philippine Cultural Week. With strong support from whānau, we created crafts, read Filipino stories, played traditional games, and even learned to count in Filipino.
Our tamariki discovered the importance of family ties, showing respect for elders, and the joyful spirit of Filipino celebrations. Our shared kai included dishes like pancit, puto, and ube cake.
Filipino children proudly wore their traditional clothing, sharing stories about their heritage with friends, kaiako, and whānau. This week encouraged everyone to appreciate cultural diversity and celebrate together as one community.
Matariki Music Festival
We wrapped up the month by celebrating Matariki with a special music festival. Tamariki explored the meaning behind this important Māori celebration through storytelling and song, reflecting on themes of remembrance, gratitude, and new beginnings.
Our talented kaiako led music sessions with favourites like Waitī Waitā, encouraging everyone to sing, listen, and connect. Tamariki learned that Matariki is a time to gather, share, and look forward with hope.
These celebrations reflect our commitment to embracing the cultures that make our centre unique. We are proud to help our tamariki grow into curious, respectful, and inclusive learners who value the world around them.
