This week at BestStart Kamo Central, we were fortunate to celebrate Diwali — the festival of lights — alongside our tamariki, kaiako, parents, and whānau. We were especially grateful to one of our whānau members who joined us to share parts of her culture and bring this special celebration to life.

She began by showing us how to create beautiful sand art, using bright, vibrant colours and candles to form stunning patterns. Tamariki were fascinated as they watched and listened to her explanations about this special tradition.

Next, she brought along a selection of traditional Indian clothing for everyone to experience. All the girls were able to try on the outfits, and she dressed our kaiako and any tamariki who wished to join in. The children were full of excitement as they explored the textures, colours, and beauty of the garments.

To finish the celebration, she played Indian music and taught a simple dance. Soon, the playground was filled with laughter, movement, and joy as we danced together. We are thankful for the opportunity to learn, celebrate, and connect as a community. Moments like this help tamariki develop understanding, appreciation, and respect for the many cultures within our centre.
