Part of our partnership at BestStart Māngere East is getting our whānau involved in the learning journey. We were excited to host a special Parent Day!

Gianna’s mum, Taknoa, visited to share her knowledge and experiences with the tamariki. As a nurse and local hero, she spoke about what happens when we get sick, how to take care of ourselves, and the importance of hygiene and healthy habits. The children were fascinated, enjoyed her visuals, and loved learning firsthand from someone who helps our community every day.

It was also a special moment for teachers to connect more deeply with parents, learning about their skills, experiences, and the ways they contribute to our community. Seeing the children learn from and interact with Gianna’s whānau made the day even more meaningful—and joyful to see Gianna’s proud smile as her mum led mat time.

This session was a wonderful reminder of the importance of health, wellbeing, and the vital role whānau play in supporting our tamariki’s learning and growth. It also highlights how much we can learn from our families and their amazing passions.
