Diwali means “row of light” and is the Indian Festival of Lights. During this time people will light up their houses with diya (clay lamps), set off fireworks, make delicious sweet treats and Rangoli patterns (using coloured flour). As Diwali is celebrated on the new-moon (Amavasya) night, lights and fireworks have a significant role to play in this festival. The lighting of fireworks is interpreted as a way to ward off all evil spirits as well as add to the festive mood. The Investigators have been celebrating this special occasion and created our very fireworks display. Using dish brushes and even our hands to splatter the bright colours onto our paper. As the tamariki splattered the paint we made lots of fireworks noises like ‘bang!” super loud because they say the louder the fireworks the better.
