For Matariki this year tamariki learnt and practised a special waiata "Tirama Tirama Matariki" while learning the sign language for 'star'. We preformed this in front of our whānau before planting a special lemon tree. The prep-room children made a special sign for the tree with the name Tupuānuku as this star represents growth and the importance of harvesting and gathering food which the lemon tree will do.

After this we celebrated with a shared afternoon tea inviting our whānau to come together to signify the beginning of the new year and the growth ahead for all.  Throughout the week kaiako provided a range of art experiences, baking,  stories and waiata that supported children with their knowledge and understanding of Matariki.
