Celebrating our Cultures

Here at BestStart St Andrews we celebrate and learn about all the different cultures in New Zealand. Recently we have celebrated Chinese New Year, Samoan Language week and Vaisakhii.

Our tamariki have enhanced their knowledge about ripening crops like wheat, corn and mustard, and their importance in our food. They have learnt about this festival where farmers celebrate the harvesting of their crops. Our 3-5 year old tamariki did some learning activities like painting music drums, wheat plants and dancing to Punjabi songs related to the festival in which they showed their full interest and loved watching videos of wheat growing and the harvesting process.

Vaisakhi symbolizes the joy of the ripening of crops and the farmers celebrate it with great pleasure and enthusiasm, mainly within an agricultural festival in India (Punjab).

It is also an important day in sikh religion as on the same day, 13 April 1699, the tenth Guru Govind Singh Ji found the Khalsa Panth. For Samoan Language week we had a disco where our tamariki put on a little show/dance for their parents and family. It was a great evening and fun was had by all.
