We celebrated Rakhi festival at BestStart Katikati last week. Some of the children from our Indian community had beautiful bracelets/Rakhi's on their wrists. We informed our curious children that these special bracelets are called Rakhi/Rakhri and it signifies the lovely bond between brothers and sisters. In India, sisters tie Rakhi's around their brother's wrists and brothers promise to look after them. Our tamariki were really amazed to know that and we all sat down to make our special bracelets. There were lots of interesting conversations about brothers and sisters followed by hand eye coordination, sharing, turn taking and cultural awareness.
