Tamariki in the Koru Room at Blenheim Central have been busy painting ceramic Christmas decorations—an activity that blends creativity with fine motor skill development. As tamariki choose their decoration, whether it’s a star, tree, or snowman, they engage in decision-making, reflecting their interests and personal preferences. This simple act of selecting their favourite piece encourages a sense of ownership and pride in their creation.

With paintbrush in hand, tamariki practise their concentration and coordination. Holding the brush, choosing colours, and applying paint with care requires focus and precision—skills that are foundational in early childhood development. As they experiment with different strokes and techniques, they’re also building their hand control and dexterity.

Colour choice is another exciting part of the process. Some tamariki may opt for traditional reds and greens, while others might explore vibrant blues or bright greens. This freedom to select their own palette allows them to express individuality and creativity. No two decorations are ever the same, and that’s what makes them special!

Through this activity, tamariki experience the joy of creating personalised decorations that capture their imagination. These unique ornaments brighten the Christmas tree and celebrate each child’s creativity and growth, while also linking to our philosophy of Tūrangawaewae—growing confident explorers who feel a sense of belonging and freedom to express themselves.
