Cloud Experiments

Here at Beststart Sunset we have a love of Science which shines through with our tamariki.

Tamariki are discovering about clouds, this is done through the use of water dye and foam.

In the experiment, we filled a clear container halfway with water and covered the top with shaving foam. We carefully added small drops of dye onto the foam and watched as the colour slowly soaked through. When the dye reached the water, it formed little raindrop-like streams and swirled down to the bottom.

The dye is a liquid and the foam is more solid, so it takes time to soak through, and the dye swirls because of movement in the water as the foam begins to melt. Tamariki are curious and growing into scientific thinkers as they observe cause and effect in the experiment, chatting about what they see.

Watching and repeated attempts demonstrate the disposition of persistence and curiosity. Tamariki develop working theories for making sense of the natural world and begin to use early scientific ideas to explain observations.

This work aligns with our BestStart cognitive-based philosophy and with He Māpuna te Tamaiti approaches to supporting tamariki to regulate and engage in learning through responsive relationships (manaakitanga, whanaungatanga).
