Our recent visit to the Taranaki Aviation Transport and Technology Museum was filled with excitement, curiosity, and rich opportunities for learning.

Because this was our second trip, we extended our time so the children could explore more deeply and revisit their favourite activities.

The rescue and emergency zones were especially popular. Children paired up to operate the rescue speed boats, giving each other clear instructions like “turn” and “go straight,” showing growing confidence in communication and teamwork.

They also enjoyed the helicopter ride, boat ride, red tunnel, and the TV studio, where several children proudly took turns reading the news on SNN. Many were especially drawn to the rescue boats and the digital fire‑extinguishing activity, returning again and again to practise their skills.

Their curiosity led them to the lift, and travelling together to another level was a highlight of the day. The indoor rock‑climbing wall offered a chance to test their physical abilities before everyone paused for a special ice‑cream treat.

While watching delivery trucks pass by, the children shared stories about their favourite moments. Later, at the bus stop, we talked about catching bus number 8 to Merrilands. The children carefully watched each bus arrive and confidently identified the numbers, proudly recognising when their bus pulled in.

This excursion strengthened communication, cooperation, and confidence, while also supporting children’s growing awareness of numbers, symbols, and community spaces.

Experiences like this help build a strong sense of belonging and connection with the people and places of Aotearoa, nurturing language, identity, and exploration in meaningful ways.
