This year at Best Start Baverstock we have been focusing on getting to know our local history and community. To start the year, we connected with our local Buddhist temple- Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple, who invited us for a centre visit. Our tamariki were very excited to be out in the community connecting to stories from their wider worlds.

Along our walk our tamariki were very observant about the happenings of the day taking notice of community workers such as builders and waste management tracks. They also showed great attributes of manaakitanga as they disucssed how we could better care for our environments by maing sure we picked up our litter and looked after papatuanuku. Once we arrived, we explored the temple grounds learning more about the symbols and origins of Buddhism.

Our little learners had lots of questions about the temple, and we were lucky to have some of these answered by the temple volunteers and our whanau helpers. Through these conversations we were able to learn not only about our community but also see through a different perspective. We are very excited to have walks in our community become a regular part of our curriculum as we continue to learn and care more about the world around us.
