Reflecting on our recent activities in the Fantail room, it's evident that the painting of dinosaur models was a resounding success in promoting creativity and fine motor skills.

This self-directed activity allowed our tamariki to embody Magda Gerber's RIE philosophy, encouraging them to explore their physical abilities and achieve a sense of accomplishment.

During these sessions, children displayed determination and perseverance, as well as the willingness to take on challenges. These align with Te Whāriki’s focus on motor control and coordination. By engaging freely with the 3D models, the tamariki demonstrated creativity and problem-solving as they maneuvered paintbrushes around the models.

This task also required them to balance and coordinate, enhancing both their fine and gross motor skills. The level of detail varied among children, showcasing their unique learning journeys depending on their age and abilities.

As kaiako, we extended this activity into verbal language development by introducing dialogue in both English and Te Reo Māori, which facilitated crucial serve and return interactions. This not only advanced their motor skills but also enriched their communication abilities and their understanding of social interactions.

The activity exemplified a holistic approach to learning, connecting physical, cognitive, and social development in line with the principles of Te Whāriki and our centre’s RIE-based philosophy.
