Diwali Celebration at Our Centre Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a festival of lights that celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
It is one of the most joyful and colourful festivals celebrated across India and many other parts of the world.
At our centre, the tamariki were filled with excitement as we came together to celebrate this special occasion. The day began with a beautiful rangoli activity, where tamariki eagerly chose their favourite colours and began colouring their rangoli patterns with great enthusiasm.
It was wonderful to see their creativity and focus as they proudly said to kaiako, “Look, it looks so beautiful!” The kaiako encouraged and guided them on how to share the colours with their friends, promoting teamwork and turn-taking among them.
The vibrant designs and happy faces created a warm and festive atmosphere all around. Next, we explored mehndi art (heena), another traditional part of Diwali celebrations. Parents actively participated by applying mehndi on the tamariki’s hands, while engaging in meaningful conversations with kaiako and children.
This created a lovely opportunity for everyone to share their own cultural experiences, stories, and traditions. These kinds of cultural celebrations are very important as they help preserve our heritage and provide opportunities to share values and traditions from one community to another.
It also strengthens our relationships with parents and whānau, fostering a sense of belonging, respect, and unity. The Diwali celebration truly brought everyone together in a joyful, inclusive, and meaningful way.
