At BestStart Dixon Heights our centre vision “Love Me, Believe in Me, Teach me” is embedded in all that we do. Our curriculum is inspired by the building of strong relationships and the making of special connections between our staff, tamariki and whānau.
Our Localised Curriculum focuses on the partnerships of our community and local council. In partnership with the council, we are kaitaiki (guardians) of Te Inuwai Park which is located straight across the road from the centre. Regular excursion across to the park teach our tamariki how we can make a difference in looking after our land in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We have three (3) specifically designed rooms that support our tamariki through their ages:
Ruma Anuhe (Babies Room)
Building trust through love and nurturing relationships is our first priority with our youngest tamariki. We have a strong team of 3 kaiako in this room that have a sound knowledge base in caring for babies.
Ruma Purerehua (Toddlers Room)
Ruma Purerehua is a place where our 2 to 3.5 year olds spread their wings and fly. Our intentionally designed indoor space is created with this age group in mind which enhances opportunities to lead their own learning and grow in confidence.
Ruma Kaakahu (Preschool Room)
Ruma Kaakahu is a special place for our older tamariki to extend on what skills they already know. A room filled of opportunities to help prepare them as they soon transition to school Activities are well thought our and have “Be School Ready” in mind.
Ruma Purerehua/Kaakahu Outdoor Space
The outdoor space is a place where the older and younger tamariki come together to play. Beautiful opportunities for tuakana/teina experiences are seen here in this space. The area is designed specifically for our 2-6 age group. The outdoor space here is purpose built with the age groups in mind.
Intentional Teaching is described as: “constantly thinking about what you are doing as a teacher and how it will support or enable children’s development and learning". This year, we as a team are focusing on our Intentional Teaching.
