At BestStart Glenfield, we love celebrating the different cultures in our community, and this year’s Diwali celebrations were a great example of that. Throughout the year, we celebrate events like Lunar New Year, Matariki, Diwali, and Language Weeks, which support our children in learning about different cultures.

This year, we made Diwali extra special with a whole week of fun experiences. We started with a henna (mehndi) art session, where a parent came in to teach the children about this beautiful tradition. Henna is often used during Diwali to bring joy, beauty, and good luck. The children had fun learning about it and even had their hands decorated with henna designs, which was a wonderful way to experience this cultural tradition.

Another fun experience was making pink coconut balls, a tasty treat that’s popular during Diwali. Diwali is a time when families share sweets, symbolising the victory of good over evil and the joy of being together. The children enjoyed making these colourful coconut balls and learned about the importance of food during celebrations.

To end the week, we held a colour run. Although this isn’t a traditional Diwali experience, it was a fun way to capture the joy and energy of the festival. Diwali is all about bringing light into the darkness, and the colour run was a fantastic way for the children to experience that feeling of excitement and celebration.

These experiences helped the children not only enjoy Diwali but also understand the meaning behind the festival. At BestStart Glenfield, we’re proud to create a place where all cultures are celebrated, and the children can learn from and appreciate each other.
