Embracing diversity and multicultural learning

Cultural diversity is celebrated at BestStart Te Heuheu Street Kindy with enthusiasm by ngā kaiako and ngā tamariki.

In the last two months, we have enjoyed embracing the Pacific Language Weeks!

We have learnt about Pacific heroes from the past and present, dancing and singing to music. Ngā tamariki have made their own instruments from boxes and tubes, and used rākau sticks.

Through exploring with Waka and Water, some tamariki have followed a process to make their own waka with sails and natural resources. They have enjoyed experimenting with floatation in the water trough, seeing what floats and what sinks.

We also had a shared whānau celebration lunch for Diwali. Everyone had an extremely fun day while dressed brightly. The Kindy was beautifully decorated. There were activities, crafts, music and traditional dancing all day. Some chose to have their hands and arms decorated with henna.

With so much music, ngā tamariki decided to create their own rock band. They sang some of their favourite songs that they love to listen to at home and while travelling to Kindy.

All these learning experiences create a culture that promotes social competency and a wider compassion and understanding of each other.
