Getting out into the community is a valuable part of our learning programme at BestStart Wooing Tree.

These experiences offer tamariki meaningful opportunities to develop a sense of belonging, connection, and understanding of the wider world around them.

Whether it's a walk to a local park, a visit to a nearby business, or a planned excursion to a special location, these outings allow children to see themselves as part of a community. Engaging with familiar places and people builds their confidence, social skills, and cultural awareness.

Excursions also provide rich, hands-on learning experiences that support our curriculum goals—promoting communication, gross motor skills, problem-solving, and the ability to follow instructions and contribute in group settings, all of these are to support the child getting ready for school.

We carefully plan and risk-assess all outings to ensure they are safe, age-appropriate, and aligned with the interests and developmental needs of our tamariki. Together, these community experiences help our children feel grounded, valued, and connected—a key part of their journey towards being confident and capable learners.

We are currently attending Wednesday Mat Time at the Cromwell Public Library, where our tamariki have the opportunity to enjoy listening to stories and develop a love for reading. This special time also includes fun activities provided by the library team, supporting both early literacy and creative expression. These visits also help children build social skills as they engage with new people and practice listening, taking turns, and participating in a group setting.

In addition to our library visits, the tamariki also enjoy regular outings to the Wooing Tree grass area. This space provides an excellent opportunity to develop gross motor skills through group games and large movement activities. With the open space to run, jump, climb, and explore, children are encouraged to build strength, coordination, and confidence in their physical abilities, all while having fun and connecting with their peers in an outdoor environment.

These community experiences are a valuable part of our programme, supporting holistic development and helping our tamariki grow into confident, capable learners.
