Living Eggs: A Memorable Learning Experience

From hatching fluffy chicks to building strong relationships, the Living Eggs programme offered tamariki a rich, hands-on journey into nature, science, and care—supporting Te Whāriki and strengthening connections between home and centre.

The Living Eggs programme provided an unforgettable experience at our centre, allowing tamariki to witness the magic of life up close. From the arrival of the incubator to the excitement of fluffy chicks hatching, children were engaged in a hands-on journey that sparked curiosity and inspired rich conversations, questions, and exploration.

Watching the daily changes helped deepen their understanding of life cycles, growth, and the importance of caring for living things with gentleness and responsibility. This real-world experience supported key strands of Te Whāriki, our early childhood curriculum.

Tamariki developed scientific observation skills, empathy, and a sense of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) as they monitored the incubator, recorded changes, and nurtured the newly hatched chicks. The programme also encouraged literacy and numeracy through writing, drawing, counting, and predicting hatch times, offering meaningful, play-based learning opportunities.

Whanaungatanga (relationships) also flourished, as the excitement was shared among tamariki, teachers, and whānau. Families became actively involved through photos, stories, and conversations at drop-off and pick-up, strengthening the link between home and centre.

The shared experience created a strong sense of community and pride. The Living Eggs programme truly brought our curriculum to life—offering a powerful, holistic, and joyful learning journey for all involved.
