Recently, a group of preschool tamariki walked to the Pioneer Village to explore our local history. In particular, we were keen to visit an old church that used to sit on the land that our centre currently sits on. Our tamariki were so engaged as we learned about the history of Kaikohe and the history of the piece of land that our centre sits on.

After, having a look through the church, nga tamariki got to visit the old Utakura School and dress up in some old clothes and pretend to be in class. We then went to look through the old courthouse, jail, and barn. So much local history in one place! After we had a look through the buildings and learned lots of new information, we all sat down in the nice weather for lunch.

Trips like these are such a big part of our Centre, as we look to get out and about in our community, helping our tamariki develop a sense of pride and a genuine connection with their hometown. Our vision is to nurture Kaikohe's future leaders, and trips like these help our tamariki develop their amazing leadership skills through self-management, curiosity, and responsibility!
