At Kindy, we have been embarking on an exciting child-led inquiry into the universe. What began as a spark of curiosity has grown into a deep exploration of the world beyond Earth, with tamariki leading the way through their questions, wonderings, and discoveries.
As part of our journey, we have been exploring the importance of the sun and learning about the many ways it supports life on Earth. Through conversations, books, videos, art experiences, experiments, and hands-on exploration, tamariki have been developing an understanding of how the sun provides warmth, light, and energy for all living things.
Our learning has also been enriched through te ao Māori, where we have explored the story of Māui and the Sun. Tamariki have been fascinated by how Māui slowed the sun to create longer days, allowing people more time to complete their daily tasks. Through this pūrākau, children have been making connections between traditional Māori knowledge, storytelling, and scientific understandings of the natural world.
More recently, our inquiry has expanded to focus on Earth itself. Tamariki have been investigating what makes our planet special, exploring land, water, nature, and the interconnected systems that support life. These explorations have sparked thoughtful discussions about caring for our environment and our role as kaitiaki of the Earth.
Throughout this inquiry, we have witnessed tamariki demonstrating curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and a genuine desire to understand how the world works. Their theories, questions, and ideas continue to shape the direction of our learning, reminding us of the power of child-led exploration.
We are excited to see where this journey takes us next as we continue to explore the universe together—one question, one discovery, and one wonder-filled moment at a time.
