Anya, a volunteer at our local Community Gardens, showed us all around the garden area and gave our tamariki jobs to do to help out.  The children watered the tomatoes with 'worm juice' from their worm farm.  Some of the worms from the Community Gardens will be making their way to our kindy soon to get our own worm farm going!  We saw some very large pumpkin plants growing and went on a treasure hunt to find more, and we learned not to touch them yet because they still needed to grow bigger before they were ready to eat.  The apple cucumbers were ready to be picked and we all got to pick one and bring it back to kindy for a taste.

This was a fantastic experience for our tamariki to participate in, as it gives them an opportunity to experience a much larger scale garden. Not only does gardening help develop practical life skills, it also develops an appreciation, respect and enjoyment of the natural world. They used the knowledge they have gained at kindy in our own vege gardens and applied it here in the Community Gardens.  The children learned that the Community Gardens even have a beehive to breed ‘queen bees’ and that the bees help pollinate their plants.
