At BestStart Flat Bush Pepe Room, we recognise the important role dramatic play has in supporting young children’s learning and development. Through pretend play, our tamariki make sense of the world around them, explore new ideas, and build on their everyday experiences in meaningful and engaging ways.
Recently, many of our children have shown a growing interest in caring for babies. By observing their peers and kaiako, they are learning what it means to nurture and care for others. It has been heartwarming to watch tamariki bring these observations into their play as they gently cuddle dolls, offer bottles, feed them, and lovingly pat them to sleep. These experiences reflect their developing understanding of relationships, empathy, and kindness towards others.
Dramatic play provides rich opportunities for learning across many areas of development. As children engage in role play, they strengthen their communication and language skills, build social confidence, and learn to interact and cooperate with others. They are also encouraged to use their imagination, explore different perspectives, solve problems, and express their thoughts and feelings in creative ways.
For our youngest learners, these moments of pretend play are much more than simply having fun. They are valuable opportunities to develop a sense of belonging, build trusting relationships, and grow confidence in their own abilities.
We look forward to continuing to provide an environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and meaningful learning through play each day.
