We gathered a safe distance from the beehive to watch the beekeeper check on its progress. We watched as the beekeeper calmed the bees with smoke, and then inspected each part of the hive. We talked about what bees do in our environment and how they collect pollen and also pollinate plants. The tamariki were given some beeswax to look at, and we discovered that there was some honey in the comb. We had a look at the queen bee and saw that she looked very different to the worker bees. We found out that most of the worker bees are female. The beekeeper put some bees in a ziplock plastic bag and showed the tamariki up close. It was amazing to witness this today.

Our tamariki are learning about their world and how important bees are to our environment.

TopKids Puketaha are so excited to have received our harvest of Honey from the beehive we have been hosting for the last year

Our hive started off as a single layer hive, and quickly became one of Zen Beez Ltd highest performing hives with multi layers.  Over the last 12 months we were very lucky witness our beehive grow in layer and be a part of the regular checks from our bee keeper.  This process has provided amazing opportunity to learn all about the benefit of bees in our environment and how the beehive operates.

Earlier this year, the honey was extracted from the hive, and the beekeeper got a total of 18kg from our hive!  Today we had 8kg of this honey delivered (with customised labels!) and we are looking forward to sampling this delicious looking boutique, raw honey!  We will be able to sell jars of this honey to our whanau as a fundraiser too!

We look forward to another successful year of honey making at TopKids Puketaha!
