BestStart Parnell have been working on achieving Healthy Heart Award from the Heart Foundation, to be able to pursue this award, all stakeholders; teachers, children, and Whanau are working together on this project for the benefits of healthy lifestyles.

Our tamariki have been apart of this learning journey as we have included them in growing and planting vegetables in our Kai garden, reading books about healthy eating and playing games around healthy fruits and vegetables.

We have grown tomatoes and carrots in the summer, and we harvested the vegetables last month. Children were helping the teachers in harvesting the vegetables and we enjoyed eating the fresh vegetables and herbs in our meals. Our amazing cook Cherry created a new menu for Winter, and she will include our vegetables in her meals.

As part of our healthy heart inquiry, we have continued to plant new vegetables and herbs in our garden. We added different vegetables and herbs this time to extend our tamariki knowledge about vehetables. We are growing broad beans, carrots, spring onions, spinach, silver beets and broccoli in our Kai garden. While the children are helping in the garden, we have talked to our tamariki about the importance of eating healthy vegetables. Our tamariki enjoy helping in the garden and they also learning how to look after our Papatuanuku (Mother Earth).
