Heuristic play happens when tamariki play with and explore the properties of objects, everyday items you may find in your home. This play stimulates all their senses, and creates rich learning experiences.

Tamariki get to decide which object to choose first, then the act of reaching out and grabbing, handling and moving around the various objects will help develop hand to eye co-ordination, fine motor skills and muscle control.

Heuristic play is open-ended, each item can be handled and used in a variety of ways, requiring imagination and creativity. This kind of discovery play can encourage deep concentration and as they grow they will develop more of their own ideas, think creatively, and explore how one item can be used in a variety of ways.
