The day before our special cooking experience, we became artists.

The children painted a colourful observational picture of a fruit kebab, choosing bright reds, yellows, and greens.

As the image of a fruit kebab was displayed on the easel, we gathered together and talked about all the different fruits we could see. We named them, described their colours and shapes, and shared our ideas about which ones we might like to eat.

The following day, we began by reading the book about making fruit kebab,s 'Kepapa Huarākau Fruit Kebabs' and revisiting the steps together, just like true chefs. While the ngā tamariki prepared the fruit, we discussed peeling and cutting it safely, explored mathematical concepts by halving and slicing the fruit, and counted the pieces.

In the afternoon dueing tea time, each child was given a skewer and a piece of fruit along with a marshmallow. Ngā tamariki displayed a huge amount of concentration while pushing the fruit through the sticks. There were questions, smiles, giggles and proud faces as everyone created their own unique gruit kebab.

This experience gave our tamariki a rich opportunity to revisit their learning about cooking utensilc, the names of fruits, and engaging in a variety of different cooking actions like peeling, cutting, and slicing, while developing confidence and understanding of food preparation.

From painting to reading, preparing and eating, tamariki experience the joy of learning, doing, and turning ideas into delicious, colourful creations.
