In the toddler ruma (room ) at BestStart Maui we are learning about colours.

At group mat times we are learning them in te reo as well, utilising the colour song; ma is white. These learning moments link to Te Whariki as it says kaiako extend toddlers’ oral language by encouraging the use of their first language, modelling new words and phrases.

Kaiako in the toddler ruma provide opportunities to experience other languages and cultures and they love learning about the Maori culture. Tamariki ma get excited when we sing along to the colour song and enjoy the visual flashcards as they name the objects too.

This is enhancing tamariki ma language, vocabulary and early literacy learning. Toddlers have many opportunities to play games and use a range of sensory resources that feature different numbers, symbols, shapes, sizes, and colours.

Kaiako in the ruma are focusing on the 16 areas of play where they are introducing a vareity of learning experiences for tamariki ma to enhance their language and early literacy learning..
