At BestStart Greerton, we encourage literacy and social interactions. Through creative expression and collaborative activities, our tamariki develop creativity and fine motor skills, which support pencil grip for writing. We love to get messy and explore many different mediums for art, fostering an environment where children can freely express themselves. We have playdough available every day, allowing us to create some amazing sculptures. 

This daily activity not only enhances their artistic skills but also strengthens their hand muscles, which is crucial for writing. Additionally, we incorporate various other materials such as paints, clay, and recycled items to stimulate their imagination and creativity. In this photo, you can see a teacher working alongside a child to support the child’s ability to use matchsticks to build a structure. This activity also helps further develop and explore oral language and social interactions. 

The teacher’s guidance is essential in helping the child articulate their thoughts and ideas, promoting better communication skills. We have children of different ages supporting each other, fully embracing the concept of Tuakana-Teina, where older or more experienced children help guide the younger ones. This practice not only fosters a sense of community but also teaches valuable lessons in cooperation, empathy, and leadership. By working together, our tamariki learn the importance of teamwork and how to effectively collaborate to achieve common goals.
