Kia Ora koutou, In the Ōtākaro ruma (Preschool classroom) we have noticed a huge interest in activities that require fine motor development and hand-eye co-ordination skills. These skills then strengthen muscles in the children’s fingers to be able to hold a pencil correctly ready for early literacy skills.

The children in our Ōtākaro (Preschool) classroom have been really engaged and show such great concentration while exploring these specific activities. One of the favourites has been transferring little pom poms from one container to the next using big plastic tweezers or tongs. The tamariki really enjoy completing this activity alongside their peers which opens up great conversations about how they complete it or if they need ideas on how to hold the tongs/ tweezers correctly to be able to transfer the object.

By engaging in this activity, the tamariki are using so many skills such as - crossing their midline, concentrating, further developing their fine motor skills, using their hand-eye co-ordination skills, communicating with each other and having an absolute blast together!

It is important to give every child the opportunity to explore activities like these so every child can develop the skills they need to be successful learners within our preschool environment.
