The tamariki at BestStart Oamaru Kindy enjoy exploring our large outdoor area, with a special interest being shown in the changing seasons. From exploring falling autumn leaves to the frosts that winter is now bringing us, the tamariki are encouraged to develop their relationships with their environment and nature.

Their love for and interest in dinosaurs is also ongoing, and the kaiako support the tamariki's interests with a range of experiences they can share in together. This time, combining their interests and curiosity around dinosaurs and winter together, by making dinosaur ice eggs!

Tamariki helped the kaiako to put little dinosaurs inside balloons and fill them water, then into the freezer they went until the next day. The tamariki had opportunities to explore their scientific theories, as the balloons went into the freezer feeling soft and bouncy and came out of the freezer feeling hard and cold.

The tamariki used droppers to drip warm water onto the ice eggs and discover the ice melting and their dinosaur 'hatching'! The children shared in each other's excitement as their eggs hatched, and also supported their friends whose eggs needed a little more work to hatch by helping out with more warm water.

Part of our philosophy is children learning in an authentic, warm, and secure environment where they develop relationships with others and the world around them.
