This month, our tamariki explored Matariki through stories, waiata, star art, and shared kai. Together, we celebrated the Māori New Year, reflecting on the past, celebrating the present, and embracing new beginnings as a centre whānau.
Kia ora whānau,
This month, we have been learning about and celebrating Matariki, the Māori New Year, in our centre. Matariki is a special time to come together with our whānau and community. It is a chance to reflect, give thanks, and look forward to new beginnings.
Additionally, it is a time to honour those who came before us, celebrate the present, and make plans for the future.
Throughout the month, tamariki explored the meaning of Matariki through stories, waiata (songs), and creative activities. They especially enjoyed making and painting stars, blowing glittery paint, and searching for stars in the night sky. These hands-on experiences helped deepen their understanding of this important cultural celebration in a fun and engaging way.
We also shared kai (food) as part of our Matariki celebration, giving tamariki the chance to experience the importance of manaakitanga—hospitality and kindness.
A big thank you to all the families who contributed and supported us—it truly added warmth to our celebration. Your involvement makes these moments even more special.
Celebrating Matariki helps us strengthen our sense of belonging, identity, and connection—values that are at the heart of our centre. We look forward to continuing this journey of learning and growing together.
Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori!
Ngā mihi nui,
Flat Bush Team
