Messy play is a valued and intentional part of our everyday programme at BestStart Puketaha.
Each day, we design opportunities for children to explore, discover, and learn through hands-on, sensory-rich experiences that spark curiosity and joy.
Whether they’re making gloop, creating pretend snow, experimenting with colours, or simply enjoying the feel of different textures, our tamariki love getting messy—and the learning benefits are truly endless.
Through messy play, children develop important cognitive skills as they experiment, problem-solve, test ideas, and make sense of the world around them. These experiences also support physical development, as children scoop, pour, mix, squeeze, and manipulate materials.
Such actions naturally strengthen both fine and gross motor skills in a way that feels playful, engaging, and meaningful. We understand that weekends and evenings can be busy for many families, making it challenging to set aside time—or space—for messy activities at home.
Parents often tell us how much they appreciate knowing their children can fully enjoy these experiences in a supportive, well-prepared environment at our centre. Most importantly, messy play nurtures creativity.
With no right or wrong way to participate, children are free to express themselves, explore ideas, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
