Our tamariki have been delighted to play with our new mud kitchen, recently installed in our outdoor environment. This compliments our large and inviting, well-equipped outdoor play space. It inspired their curiosity and they explored it with and alongside their peers.

This experience makes connections to nature and the joy of play in Papatūānuku. This also supports cooperative play along with early science and mathematic skills. Working together with others in the sandspit on a shared project develops interactive social skills which are very important.

How do I communicate my idea? How do I accept there are many ideas? How can I be part of the cooperation to make something big in the sandpit?

Here at BestStart Kaiapoi we support play-based learning as an approach to learning where tamariki actively engage and make sense of their environment and everything in it, including other children or people and this occurs naturally through everyday experiences. Learning through play engages children and fosters a love for life long learning and this happens throughout the day here at BestStart Kaiapoi, with daily routines and rituals used as key moments to provide meaningful learning opportunities.
