Kaiako at Best Start Napier Central are committed to being worthy of imitation!

We are role models and we actively mentor and work alongside our pēpi (infants and toddlers), to foster an environment of shared learning and growth.

One of our key strategies involves the use of music and musical resources to create meaningful, engaging learning experiences. Music and movement support a wide range of developmental outcomes such as helping pēpi become responsible, resilient, and confident explorers of their world.

Through group music sessions, pēpi develop important social skills, such as cooperation, turn-taking, and empathy. When pēpi participate in music and dance experiences, they also enhance their ability to express emotions, language development is supported, and strong communication skills are developed and strengthened.

Sharing songs and dances from various cultures also fosters respect for diversity and strengthens each child’s sense of identity and belonging. These experiences contribute to a positive self-concept, as children see their culture and contributions valued. Music becomes a powerful tool for nurturing creativity, imagination, and joyful learning.

As Kaiako, we believe that when children are immersed in rich, culturally responsive musical environments, they thrive socially, emotionally, and cognitively—laying the foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.
