Music in Montessori for under-2s is not about teaching musical skill.
It is about supporting natural development, building sensory awareness, and nurturing joy, connection, and communication.
Our Nido room has been alive with rhythm and curiosity as our youngest learners explored a variety of musical instruments. Music offers rich sensory experiences, and the tamariki were eager to listen, touch, and experiment with each new sound they discovered.
We introduced drums, shakers, bells, tambourines, and xylophones, giving the children time to explore freely and at their own pace. Some were drawn to the deep beat of the drum, while others enjoyed the gentle jingle of bells or the bright tones of the xylophone. Happy faces appeared as they explored making new sounds.
As confidence grew, kaiako gently guided the tamariki through simple musical experiences such as tapping a steady beat, exploring loud and soft sounds, and following short rhythmic patterns. These playful moments supported fine motor skills, coordination, listening, and early communication.
Music time quickly became a joyful highlight of the day, helping build confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music. We look forward to many more musical discoveries together in our Nido room.
