Our Waitā children had a wonderful and meaningful experience during Nature Scientist Day, filled with curiosity, exploration and creativity. The day began outdoors, where the tamariki were invited to closely observe the natural environment around them. They explored a variety of plants, leaves, flowers, bark and twigs, using their senses to notice colours, shapes, textures and smells.

Many children showed deep interest as they compared large and small leaves, smooth and rough surfaces, and shared their observations with friends and kaiako. These conversations supported their language development and encouraged collaborative learning.

Back inside, the children continued their investigation through play, guided by the kaiako, by using leaves and twigs with playdough. They pressed, poked, rolled and arranged natural materials to create patterns, animals and imaginative designs. This hands-on activity supported their fine motor skills, problem-solving and creative thinking while strengthening their connection to nature.

The kaiako also explained to the tamariki how tea leaves are processed and placed into tea bags for us to enjoy as a drink. The children were fascinated by this discovery and eagerly shared their thoughts and questions.

Throughout the day, the Waitā children demonstrated curiosity, confidence and respect for the environment. This experience encouraged them to see themselves as capable learners and little scientists, deepening their appreciation for the natural world around them.
