At BestStart Onehunga, the essence of community and togetherness was beautifully showcased during our recent ‘Whānau Hui’, a family gathering that brought parents, children, and kaiako together in a joyful celebration of connection and creativity. Almost every family arrived, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement and anticipation.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the children's performance. For weeks, tamariki had been rehearsing their songs, and the moment finally came for them to shine. As they stood before their parents, they happily sang the waiata. Parents were excited as they eagerly captured these precious moments on their phones, preserving memories of their children’s delightful performance.

After the concert, tamariki had the opportunity to make collage with their whānau. We had collage stations set up in both the inside and outside room area. “BestStart Onehunga Whānau Hui” was written for tamariki and their parents to collage. This activity provided opportunity for families to come together and create something special. The collages came out beautifully. As the creative activities concluded, the gathering moved to the Uenuku room area where a feast awaited.

In true whānau spirit, each family had brought a shared plate, contributing to a diverse and delicious spread of kai. The tables were adorned with a variety of dishes, from savoury treats to sweet delights, reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures within our community. As parents and children gathered around, enjoying the delicious food, conversations flowed freely.

It was a wonderful opportunity for parents to connect with one another, sharing stories and experiences, while also getting to know the kaiako who care for their children each day. The room was filled with warmth and laughter, a testament to the strong sense of community that defines BestStart Onehunga.

The evening was truly one of fun, togetherness, and gratitude, strengthening unity of our tamariki, whānau and kaiako. As we reflect on this special gathering, we are reminded of the importance of coming together as a community, supporting one another, and celebrating the unique bonds we share. Here’s to many more joyful gatherings at BestStart Onehunga, where the spirit of ‘Where whānau come first’ continues to thrive.
