This week at our centre, we celebrated Chinese Language Week with a variety of engaging activities that introduced children to the rich culture, heritage, and traditions of China.
Children explored writing numbers in Chinese—1, 2, and 3—carefully practising each character and enjoying the challenge of learning something entirely new. They also participated in singing Chinese songs and learning simple Mandarin greetings, which encouraged them to use the language in playful and meaningful ways.
Our kaiako read a book in Mandarin about the names of the days, helping children connect language to daily life and sparking curiosity about how different cultures express time and routines. Throughout the week, children were actively involved in hands-on experiences that promoted language development, cultural awareness, and social interaction.
They observed closely, asked questions, shared their ideas, and supported one another as they explored these new concepts together.
The celebration concluded with a cultural dress-up day, where children proudly wore traditional Chinese attire. The room was filled with colours, creativity, and excitement as children shared what they had learned, showing respect and appreciation for Chinese culture.
Chinese Language Week provided a wonderful opportunity for children to discover a new culture, expand their knowledge, and enjoy meaningful learning experiences. As the Chinese idiom reminds us: “学无止境 (Xué wú zhǐ jìng)” — Learning has no limits, perfectly reflecting the children’s curiosity and growth during this joyful celebration.
