Our Buchanans Road Nursery tamariki have shown a huge interest in animals recently. To support their interests Nursery kaiako have been providing tamariki with a range of learning experiences that encourage tamariki to gain new knowledge and understanding about all the different animals we have around the world and their characteristics.

These experiences have included singing and dancing to different waiata, animal yoga, painting with animals, setting up small world play and reading lots of our favourite pukapuka about animals such as ‘Maranga Mai’, ‘Noisy Farm’, ‘Kiwi Hokey Tokey’ where tamariki can identify the different sounds each animal make. We have noticed lots of new language emerging throughout this time where tamariki are able to share their knowledge with each other during their play.

To extend on this interest our kaiako set up a “Veterinary Surgery” where tamariki use role play to care for ‘sick’ animals. We provided tamariki with a range of props including clip boards with appointment and symptom charts, different animal soft toys, bandages, syringes, x-ray photos, real life vet images and blankets. Our Buchanans Road whānau helped to extend on this by bringing in soft animal toys from home, a vet kit and animal cages.

Our tamariki have spent extended periods of time exploring this area, playing alongside each other and using verbal communication skills to korero with each other about what they are doing.
