Today our curious tamariki sat with me, as we read the story "Have you filled a bucket today?". We followed this story with an activity. We looked at ways we can be bucket fillers, or bucket dippers; just like in the story. Each tamaiti had 3 cards each, we took turns talking about what was happening in each picture, how we thought the tamariki in the picture were feeling by the actions of their friends. We then had beautiful kōrero and tuakana/teina (collaborative learning) as we thought about where our cards would go, was the action bucket filling or bucket dipping. Our tuakana were great at supporting our teina by talking them through their cards, and worked together to place them. He rawe ō rātou mahi, what beautiful work.

Through exploring this book and these activities we are supporting each other to share thoughts, explore and label feelings, creating moments of feeling empathy towards others; all whilst learning to be kind, caring and loving to others. By labeling our emotions, we learn to express ourselves. By developing social skills, we can lift each other up with compliments and praise, look after someone else; we can pass these skills on by teaching new friends how we love, care and nurture others here at home of the brave.
