NZ Sign Language week 2019
To support our deaf families in our centre and throughout NZ, we have been working really hard here at BestStart Buchanans Rd to grow our sign language use throughout our days. Our Nursery has found this to be so effective, not only to support our deaf children but all of our tamariki. We sign to let them know when it is time to change their nappy, to eat and to ask them questions as well as when we are singing and much more.
To celebrate NZ Sign Language Week here at BestStart Buchanans Rd we planned a special hui where each of our rooms performed a song in sign language for the rest of the centre, even our babies! This was a magical morning as we could see the amazing progress of not only our tamariki but also our Kaiako (teachers)! Our Nursery tamariki are amazing at recognising different signs, especially animals and using these signs as we sing our songs.
We are so proud of them and their amazing ability to learn a new language!
