The Nursery tamariki (children) and kaiako (teachers) have been learning more about the Olympics by exploring Olympic related experiences during July and August. The tamariki really enjoy art and sensory experiences so we provided them with these experiences, to make our own New Zealand flags, Olympic medals and torches. Using photos as visuals and talking to them about what they are and what happens with them allowed us to supported the tamariki to understand and learn more about the Olympics. We planned and facilitated lots of physical experiences which were related and similar to some of the Olympic Games events, like trampolining, long jump, cycling, shot put, gymnastics and yoga. During these experiences the tamariki worked alongside each other, further developing their social skills as they interacted with each other. They used their fine and gross motor skills, concentrated and tried hard to achieve these tasks. There was lots of laughter and smiles seen while we all had lots of fun exploring the Olympics games together.
