Each week, our four-year-olds set off on a little journey that has quickly become one of the most treasured parts of their routine: the Botany Library trip. It may seem simple, but it is filled with moments that spark curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of stories.
The excitement often begins before we even leave BestStart Botany Road. Our tamariki chat about the books they hope to find, whether the puppets will be out, or if the librarian will read a new story. For many, the library feels magical—quiet yet full of possibility.
Once there, children settle into the cosy reading area, browsing shelves at their own pace. Some return to familiar favourites, while others proudly choose something new. This independence—making choices, exploring ideas, and handling books—plays an important role in their learning.
Storytime is usually the highlight. The librarian’s animated reading encourages listening, imagination, and discussion. Children laugh, move, ask questions, and connect with each other, building language skills, focus, and social confidence.
Before heading back, each child selects a book to borrow for the week. Carrying their chosen story nurtures a sense of responsibility, pride, and ownership.
Our weekly library visit is more than an outing. It is a Set for School ritual that supports early literacy, fosters independence, and celebrates the joy of reading as our four-year-olds grow into confident, curious learners.
