Our Local Community

Today our lovely teacher Georgie set up this lovely art activity for children to recreate our local Pak n Sav that they just visited.

Each week the Waiti and Waita children visit their local Pak n Save. They buy baking items that they would need for baking day on Friday. So many endless discussions happening during their excursion especially about home life connections when they come to the super market with their families.

Georgie set this activity up to help children explore collage materials and create their very own Pak n Save. Georgie prompted open ended questions to spark meaningful conversations within the group of children.

They discussed how big the building was, how long it might have taken to build, what can they see in the surrounding area e.g. windows, signs, cars, car park, rubbish bins. This is a great activity for children to problem solve, build on their sense of imagination and creativity but most of all make sense of our local community and what is familiar to us.

The children also discussed what they saw when walking to Pak n Save and what other landmarks they saw while walking. This is a great way for us to bring in our local curriculum in action, teaching children what community we belong to and also supports our centre priority- to promote children emotional and social well being.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the creativity through the pictures.
